The financing of a nursing microsystem is a topic about which most RN’s have limited knowledge. Yet the
process of planning for revenues that at least match expenditures is of vital importance to the viability of the
microsystem.
Microsystem leaders need to know about the flow of money through the system. This is how our patient’s get
billed and ultimately how we get reimbursed (i.e. paycheck). Having the knowledge to understand these
processes and the skill to identify areas where we can make a difference in the financial viability of our
microsystem is an important contribution that we all can make. This class session will provide us with a
beginning understanding of what is necessary to identify the contribution that revenue and expense budgets
make to the provision of safe patient care.
Objectives:
At the end of this class session you will be able to:
Identify Personnel components of a nursing microsystem expense budget.
Identify Operating components of a nursing microsystem revenue budget.
Recognize activities that an RN on the nursing unit can engage in that will impact the unit’s expenses and
revenues
