SAMPLE OF ASSIGNEMENT
Introduction
Friendly neighborhoods, sociable walking trails, and an abundance of features that support a healthy population characterize the city of Saint Michael. The population
includes a wide range of ages, from newborns to centenarians. Among the city’s strengths are several dental offices, clinics, churches, 24-hour fitness centers, a
state-of-the-art library, and numerous parks with corresponding trails.
Positive Attribute
Although Saint Michael is home to many young families, it is also suitable for elderly residents. One of the most notable facilities for older adults is The Legacy of
Saint Michael, a residential complex for adults over age 55. The Legacy provides independent living, assisted living, and memory care services. Their goal is to keep
their residents as active as possible and to enrich their lives through the promotion of independence, individuality, dignity, and choice. Many amenities are offered
to residents, including transportation services, planned activities, safe and secure environments, and housekeeping. Frequent recreational activities promote
socialization between residents. They also have access to an onsite library, fitness center, gardening area, and a beauty/barber shop. A well-kept walking trail
encircles the facility and surrounding neighborhoods on both sides of the street. Medical staff members remain onsite at all times to provide care and respond in the
case of an emergency. The building is aesthetically pleasing with abundant yard space and a small pond. The facility is located in close proximity to the public
library, gas stations, I-94, and is within one mile of a grocery store and clinic. Utilization of the aforementioned attributes assures that residents have what they
need to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
Analysis of Features
The median age for the area surrounding the assisted living facility is 35 years old. This is important data because it represents a range of ages living in the area,
suggesting that it is conducive to meeting a variety of human needs no matter the life stage they are in. The abundance of schools suggest that many families choose to
raise their children in what used to be a rural farm community. The median household income near The Legacy in Saint Michael is $85,346. This value is well above the
average national household income of $50,157. Despite having such data, it is difficult to make solid inferences about public health issues such as poverty without
seeing the full data set on household incomes. For example, even though the median household income in Saint Michael is over $35,000 above the national average, there
may be outliers on the low end that represent a group of people who meet the criteria for being in poverty. Therefore, it is important for public health officials to
dig deeper into data sets when assessing health indicators in communities.
Reflection
The Age-Friendly Cities Geographic Information System [GIS] is a useful and user-friendly tool for assessing and managing public health data and informatics. The
versatility of map views allows the user to gain different perspectives related to geographic features, street names, infrastructure, and a realistic birds-eye-view of
what the land actually looks like. There are a few negatives worth noting. There were a few technical glitches when it came to adding strengths and weaknesses to the
map. I accidentally clicked out of the white box at one point and was unable to make any further edits. Therefore, I had to start over and add a new point, which may
cause confusion as both icons represent the same strength, however one has incomplete information. Furthermore, because the system is relatively new, there was little
information available in Saint Michael outside of the strength I added. As it continues to develop and include suburban areas around the Twin Cities, GIS will likely
make great contributions to nursing informatics and public health practice.
