Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) are the two most commonly used dynamic routing protocols.

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each protocol?

2. What routing metrics does each protocol use for making routing decisions?

In the world of networking, the choice between OSPF and BGP usually depends on where the routing is taking place—either inside your own network (the local neighborhood) or out on the public internet (the global highway).

OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)

OSPF is an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) used within a single Autonomous System (AS), like a corporate office or a campus.

Advantages:

Fast Convergence: OSPF reacts almost instantly to link failures. It uses Link-State Advertisements (LSAs) to update all routers in an area simultaneously.

Loop-Free: Because every router maintains a complete "map" of the network (the Link-State Database), it is mathematically impossible to form a routing loop.

Hierarchy: OSPF uses "Areas" (Area 0 as the backbone) to segment the network, which reduces CPU load on smaller routers.
