As a college educated employee, you will likely be called upon at some point to share your knowledge with your peers. If employed by a criminal justice agency, this may take the form of teaching in-service classes to your colleagues. For this course, you are to create a PowerPoint presentation that you could use successfully in teaching an in-service class on some aspect of criminology as covered during this course, CRIJ 3305. The PowerPoint will be based on an annotated bibliography.

choose and research your topic then produce an annotated bibliography of your sources. For the second part of the assignment, you are to apply what you learned from the annotated bibliography to produce a PowerPoint presentation suitable for an in-service training class for an audience of professionals.
Choose one of the theories of criminology from this course; HOWEVER, DO NOT use Classical Theory. You may use one of the NEO-CLASSICAL theories. Positivism is NOT a theory but rather a perspective, so please do not try to do a presentation on positivism. Your audience must be in-service criminal justice or social services practitioners and your presentation must address the topic so as to engage them; that is, it must be of interest and value to them. Specifically, explain the basic points of the theory then explain to your audience how this theory should be applied; could be applied, to improving their day-to-day activities in the field. That is, how can they apply the knowledge of the theory to do a better job? For example, if teaching juvenile probation officers, how could they apply labeling theory during their interactions with clients to reduce recidivism? If the audience is detectives, how could they apply knowledge of routine activities theory (one of the neo-classical theories) to investigating burglaries? If in doubt about a topic or if at a loss for a topic, please contact me in a timely manner for assistance. In fact, I strongly recommend you contact me for approval of your project WELL in advance of the due date to ensure you do what was intended.
To quote the good folks who write the Purdue Owl on-line ‘handouts’, “A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic.” “An annotation is a summary and evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and evaluation of each of the sources.” I direct your attention to the attached materials from Purdue University and from Cornell University for general directions on writing an annotated bibliography. Please remember that we follow APA formatting.
For this assignment, the first part of the two part Training Module, you will annotate the sources you found when researching your topic and that you intend to use for supporting your points when producing your PowerPoint based ethics training presentation. As stated in the syllabus, 4-6 high quality sources are a most reasonable number for this assignment. Do not use your textbook; you need to do some learning outside the class. Avoidtextbooks of any kind; check with me first. DO NOT USE encyclopedias or dictionaries or unattributed Internet sites; these are not acceptable resources and will not be considered sources. Exceptions of course exist and will be considered on a case basis.
