Each student should complete at least 4 annotations, preferably including at least one in an area
outside the assigned passages (i.e somewhere in Walker). The annotations should contain
approximately 75-150 words of original content each and at least two of the four should focus on
the original analysis of the text, alone or in comparison with earlier readings, rather than on providing
additional information (for sample additional information and original analysis annotations, see tagged
sample annotations in Smith, Generall Historie; for a sample comparison annotation, see tagged sample
annotation in the current Jefferson reading).
All of your annotations should add something to the conversation rather than repeating what others
have said. The easiest way to make sure this is happening is to choose a word or phrase that someone
else has not annotated yet. It’s fine if annotations cluster quite closely, but make sure you aren’t
repeating what others have already said.
Replies (optional): you may post up to 3 replies to other students’ posts for extra credit (see grading
explanation at the end of the post). Replies should be at least 75 words long, and should make a
substantive addition to the ideas and/or analysis in the original post (extend the original author’s
analysis, add and reflect on additional information, and/or provide an alternative interpretation of
passages and/or information analyzed in the original post).
