MECHANICS OF MATERIALS

Using the Matlab software, develop the code to create Mohr’s circle plots for the following four cases. From these plots, determine the maximum and minimum normal stresses (σ1 and σ2) and the
maximum shear stress level τxy, max for an element experiencing the following stress conditions,
Tensile Stress σx Compression Stress σy Shear Stress τxy (Clockwise)
a) 40 psi 20 psi 35 psi
b) 85 psi 70 psi 100 psi
c) 60 psi 65 psi 78 psi
d) 70 psi 40 psi 35 psi

Print the Matlab plots for all four cases and in each plot, identify (σ1 and σ2),
maximum shear stress level τxy, max , the radius R for the circle and the Center of the circle.

Using Matlab Software, verify the results of the MD solids plots in all four cases for the following parameters.

  1. Identify the maximum shear stress value, τxy, max .Verify mathematically that this is equivalent to the radius of the Mohr’s circle.
  2. Verify that the angle between the X-Y line and the horizontal line is given by the plot when you use the above values. This angle is equivalent to 2*θp where θp. Fits the equation (12-11).
  3. Compute the angle between the X-Y line and the vertical line and verify that this angle is 2θs where θs is given by equation (12-14)
  4. Identify the midpoint of the circle in the ÿ direction and verify geometrically that this point is equivalent to σavg given by equation (12-17)
  5. Maximum normal stress σ1 (Equation 12-12) and Minimum normal stress σ2 (Equation 12-12)
  6. The maximum shear stress (equation 12-15)
