Download this quiz. Answer the questions and e-mail it back to [email protected] by Saturday midnight of the FIFTEENTH WEEK OF CLASSES. (DEC 13.)

NOTE: ANSWERING SOME OF THESE QUESTIONS, requires the Googling of terms
and people for information. (If internet access is a problem for you, please let me
know, and we will work something out.)

MORE THAN TWENTY QUOTED WORDS CAN BE USED IN  ANY ANSWER

WIDE WEB?

your reasons for saying so)?

6. What do you consider the most important part of the net — Facebook, Twitter, or
You Tube, and why?

7. In line with MARSHALL MCLUHAN’s comments that the world had become a
global village, several theorists (including STANLEY MILGRAM) have proposed
that people are really closely connected to all others through serial pseudo-group
links of six or fewer. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_separation.
To get a sense of how this works in films (THE SIX DEGREES OF KEVIN
BACON), get on the web and go to http://oracleofbacon.org/, then enter, one at a
time, the names of five producers, directors, actors, or actresses who interest you,
and press the “find link” each time to find their Bacon number (degrees of
separation). Finally, report what are your results? (GOOGLE)

8. For what was MILTON BRADLEY famous, and what was his connection with
Maine? (SUPPLEMENT)

9. What were the BURMA-SHAVE SIGNS, what is their history, what is your favorite
one, and what is YOUR OWN ORIGINAL Burma-Shave Jingle? (GOOGLE
http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles/waterman37.html,http://en.wikipedia.org/
wiki/Burma-Shave, and http://www.sff.net/people/teaston/burma.htm.) (NOTE: One
bonus point for the best original Burma-Shave Jingle in the class.)

BONUS QUESTION:  Which medium is your PERSONAL favorite, and why?

TESTS FOR
COM 317: MASS MEDIA

NO MORE THAN TWENTY QUOTED WORDS CAN BE USED IN  ANY
ANSWER TO A QUESTION.

NOTE: THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT WHEN YOU PUT THE CONCEPTS IN
YOUR OWN WORDS YOU MORE DEEPLY PROCESS THEM, THUS
REMEMBERING THEM BETTER. WHEN YOU DO QUOTE, HOWEVER, BE
SURE TO USE QUOTATION MARKS. SERIAL PLAGIARISM MAY RESULT IN
YOUR BEING ELECTED VICE-PRESIDENT AS WAS JOE BIDEN. (HE WAS
CAUGHT AT IT AT LEAST TWICE: ONCE IN LAW SCHOOL AND ONCE
DURING HIS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN.)

There is a story told about Henry Ward Beecher (a prominent 19th Century preacher).  Once while taking a brief mid-western vacation with his son, he stumbled across a rural church early one Sunday morning. He stopped, introduced himself to the pastor, and asked if he could sit in on the service. Not only was the pastor honored, but he introduced Rev. Beecher to his flock. When the collection plate went around, Rev. Beecher placed a new silver dollar in it. Then, later in the service, the pastor coaxed Rev. Beecher into giving a guest sermon. It was wonderful. So afterwards, the pastor and the parishioners decided to give Rev. Beecher the collection as a payment. It was one silver dollar. Rev. Beecher and his son got in their buckboard and rode away. About a half-mile down the road, the younger Beecher turned to his father and said: “You see, dad, if you’d put more into it, you’d have gotten more out of it.”
It is, I believe, a lesson we can all learn from.

HELPING ME: I’m having to reformat most exams to save paper and make them easier to read. You can save me time and get your results back faster if you do the following things:

1.    Always keep the quiz number and title at the top of the page.
2.    Always type in your name.
3.    Always use single space spacing.
4.    Make sure all type is only BLACK.
5.    Always reproduce the entire question before your answer.
6.    Use New Times Roman font # 12 for the questions and your answers.
7.    Skip two spaces between each question.
8.    Skip one space between the question and the beginning of the answer.
9.    When a question requires you to answer several items (such as 2 below) boldprint each item before defining it and start each new item, indented on a separate line.

HELPING YOURSELF:

1.  I am convinced most of you could boost your grades by reading the notes
carefully, breaking the questions down into their components, checking
that you have answered all components, then checking your answers
against the notes, and double-checking to make sure you have not omitted
anything. (If you put down an answer it could be right; if you omit an
answer it will never be right.) Finally, if you are confused, email your
questions to me. Responding to you is part of my job.
2.    After finishing each exam and before sending it to me, always check to see you have answered every question. (You lose nothing for trying, so at least try to take a shot)
3.    If you can’t find something you are supposed to have e-mail me and I will see you get it.
4.    If you are still not clear about or confused by what you read in your text, try the web. Just type in the key words, Google, and see what you get.

NOTE: THERE IS A BONUS QUESTION (WORTH 1 POINT) ON EACH OF YOUR 13 EXAMS. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT, BUT IF YOU DO AND GET SOME OF IT RIGHT, YOU WILL GET A ½ A POINT. GET ALL OF IT RIGHT, YOU WILL GET 1 POINT. BUT THE CHOICE IS UP TO YOU.

Terrorism and International Security

Order Description

Protecting critical infrastructure includes guarding against the threat from terrorism.

Empirical evidence suggest, however, that terrorist attacks against infrastructure make up a surprisingly small percentage of all terrorist incidents.

Some even argue that many of the measures in place to protect infrastructure are ineffective, amounting to little more than “security theater”.

Given the finite resources of any government, is money well spent on protecting infrastructure from terrorism?

Evaluation based on:
1) Argument (3-5) proving or disapproving thesis (whichever is easier)
2)How well are arguments supported
3)Sources Used (should be peer-reviewed journals articles or books)
4) Quality and clarity of writing. (Short, clear and concise sentences)
