Mapping Challange
Assignment Brief
This mapping challenge sees you create a series of maps – three maps separately. The three maps need to tell a story about a place. Use these mapping sources (which are free):
• Mecone Mosaic maps https://mecone.com.au/mosaic/ (Links to an external site.)
• Six Maps https://maps.six.nsw.gov.au/ (Links to an external site.)
• Google Maps;
• Open Street Maps: https://www.openstreetmap.org/ (Links to an external site.)
• Topographic map; https://en-au.topographic-map.com/ (Links to an external site.)
Site area: Cronulla, Sydney New South Wales.
Three maps: 1) Flooding map + 2) Topography map + 3) land use map
The maps need to be at a neighbourhood scale (as per Figure 1B.5 in the NSW Apartment Design Guide). Think about a scale bar, north point, legend, title etc.
Neighbourhood scale: outlines the urban grid and block structure including streets and open spaces, significant topography, heritage and civic and community uses. Proposals for individual or small groups of apartment building sites should address this scale.
Grading Criteria
• Evidence that original source data has been used (i.e. not the same diagrams as those used in the lecture or by other student pairings)
• Clarity of the mapping/analysis (i.e. land use, key infrastructure, scale)
• The ability of the text and maps to tell an effective story about the land use and infrastructure of a place
• Accuracy of the mapping task
• Level of professional presentation/graphics/mapping
