manaqeesh

manaqeesh take one of your short papers: on e that you really liked, one that you’d like to explore more, etc. You can chose one that you had a high grade on, but remember that sometimes you may have more to say now about a past topic. **This long paper does NOT replace any short paper grades! So, which paper you chose does NOT matter regarding grades, as the Long Paper will be marked as its own assignment!** After you have chosen which short paper you want to expand, you must now think about the topic and do some actual research! For example: you ’ve chosen your space paper, and you wrote about the neighbourhood pub in Sydney that you love to go to with your friends. Take that paper and do some research on that pub: when was it built, how does it fit into the neighbourhood? What is the history of n eighbourhood pubs in Cape Breton? In Canada? How did the pub get it’s name? What kind of people use the pub, what kind of events does it have, etc.? If you are looking at a specific food you love, what is the history of that food in your region? How did it develop? What are alternate ways of preparing it in different regions? How about a certain restaurant? What is the history of that restaurant? Or think about Li Li’s article on Chinese Restaurants and talk about the history of that TYPE of restaurant. Basically, I’m asking you to now take a topic that was more personal to you, and expand it into a paper that has some ethnographic work, some library/archival research, and there should be some attempt of ANALYSIS in your work. How and why is your topic r epresentative of informal, traditional culture? Based on your research, how and why is this space, place, food, food event, job, game, sport, hobby, etc. an important window into the folklife of a specific folkgroup?
