Management
The first person in the communication is to choose one base of power, define it and provide an example in their own words. Then, that same person is to provide another example of a different base
of power in use but do not label which base of power you are talking about..
The second person in the discussion will then identify the base of power mentioned in the first entry and provide and example of that same base of power. Then, provide another example of a
different base of power in use but do not label which base of power you are talking about.
The third person (and every person thereafter) will identify the base of power mentioned in the previous entry and provide and example of that same base of power. Then, provide another example of a
different base of power in use but do not label which base of power you are talking about.
In summary - everyone is providing two examples of different bases of power. You can use a base of power that has been used before, but your example must be significantly different.
You can use your own personal experience for the examples, you can use a TV series, Movies or the experience of someone you know.
The purpose of this exercise is to ensure that you understand the bases of power and how they are executed in the workplace.
First person:
Coercive Power - When a person uses his/her position and power to make an employee complete a task, often times using a threat of the employee losing his/her job or threatening a different punitive
consequence for noncompliance.
An example of coercive power is when the president of a company brings in her personal banking and gives it to the company accountant to add to his duties. It is stated that, even though this is
not company related, it will now become a part of the accountant's duties or the accountant will lose his job.
Mystery Power Example - An engineer is speaking to a group of end users for a new construction project. The end users want to use a certain type of lighting in the building because they feel it is
budget friendly. The engineer explains that, by spending a little more on lighting in the construction phase, the end users will see a much longer time period of budget friendly outcomes in their
lighting line item. The end users decide to spend the additional money during construction in order to enjoy longer term savings over the life of the building.
