My proposed paper will focus on the wellness recovery approach for individuals living with mental health illnesses. How will your proposed paper relate to course content? The proposed paper relates to course content from the standpoint of discussing challenges for marginalized populations such as other suffering from mental illness from the perspectives of health promotion. I will also discuss the challenges that clients face from a recovery view when reintegrating into community/work place. Why do you have an interest in this topic? My interest in this topic originates from my profession as a RPN in the community setting, as well as from a personal standpoint. In my practice I come across people from all walks of life with limited support. I often find myself advocating for them when it comes to their recovery and wellness whether it be to a psychiatrist or family member. Due to the stigma of mental illness majority of the clients are discriminated against when looking for housing or finding employment, even by family members at times. Though planning and discussing a recovery plan I can assist clients to move forward and achieve simple goals such as finding safe and stable housing. I not only apply this model to clients but to my personal life. I use the Wellness Recovery Action Plan to promote my own wellness and overcome barriers created by everyday situations. How will increasing your understanding of this topic benefit you and/or your client/patient? My increasing my understanding of recovery and wellness approach will benefit me and my clients to create a recovery and wellness plan. Through this therapeutic approach the client and I can work together by incorporating previous and current treatment plans into their current recovery. As recovery goes beyond the diagnosis, and requires a deeper look into the client’s support system and their views on their recovery.
