Hector Berlioz was a Romantic composer ahead of his time in terms of orchestration, grandeur of thought, and thematic inventiveness. His most famous composition, the Symphonie Fantastique, is a piece of program music that outlines the despair of a young artist in hopeless love. The final two movements depict the hero's death by execution and a diabolical scene where he is surrounded by witches, one of whom represents his beloved, now tormenting him.
