Write a lighthearted classification-and-division essay discussing kinds of snacks, foods, cartoons, pets, status
symbols, shoppers, vacations, weight-loss diets, hairstyles or drivers. Use your personal experiences and lots
of detail to further your theme. You should have a minimum of 4 categories (4 body paragraphs). Each
category should have: 1. A name (such as Funky Hairdos) in the topic sentence. 2. Also discuss in general the
category (What makes up the Funky Hairdos?). 3. Finally, offer specific examples to prove your point (My
friend Jeanette loves to wear her hair up in spikes…) with pros and cons.
The professor sent me a message and provided me this example of what she is looking for:
Lets Say I was going to classify the types of dogs. I might say big and bulky, thin and angry, tiny torturers and
gentle giants(Four types). Those are my 4 category/body paragraphs. I would discuss in the first body
paragraph the big and bulky type in general. ex. “these are dogs who are huge and knock a person over easily.
They will eat an enormous bag of dog food in a few days and dont seem to realize they are not little…blah blah
blah,” then I would add an example: "Labradors are an excellent example of big and bulky type. My dog
butterscotch will often plop on my foot to rest or will push past me to get a treat. he often hurts me without
knowing it…blah blah “ then i i would add the positives and negatives to owning this type of dog. Once i was
done, next paragraph, i would then go on to the next type of dog and do the same thing. By the end of the
essay, i would give recommendations on which dog i would choose. Apply the examples to your topic and you
should have a good classification/division essay.
