LIFE HISTORIES FROM Worker in the Cane

  Write a 3-page life history of someone who could be from Barrio Jauca, using information you find in Worker in the Cane. Choose one of the figures described below to write about. Again, as with the last assignment, you must use parenthetical citations to show where in the book you found the information about your particular character. Feel free to make up a name and other details about that person where appropriate but again, the information you provide must be consistent with the information you find in the book and you must use parenthetical citations to show where in the book your information came from. How do you see your future in Barrio Jauca? 2). You are a peer of Taso’s father. The year is 1908. Please describe your work life on the hacienda. What kinds of jobs do you do? What are your relationships with other workers like? How you paid and what is your relationship with the mayordomo like? What is your relationship with the hacendado like? What is your family life like? 3). You are a sugar cane worker in Barrio Jauca. The year is 1948 and the Popular Party has come to power. You are a friend of Taso’s and are employed by a large American sugar corporation. Please describe your work life. What kinds of jobs do you do? What are your relationships with your co-workers and your supervisors like? How are you paid? 4). You are a woman in Barrio Jauca who is married to a sugar cane worker. You have several children. The year is 1930. What is your family life like? What kind of work do you do? How do you contribute to the household economy? 5). You are a corporate foreman working in Puerto Rico for an American sugar corporation. You used to be a mayordomo working for a hacendado until the hacienda where you worked was bought out by a U.S. corporation, Domino Sugar. How has your work life changed since you began working for the corporation? What is your relationship with the workers like now? What was it like before when you were working for a rich hacendado?
