Letter to legislator

T​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍​he Letter should include the following: 1. Correct Salutation: You are expected to identify a correct salutation to the member of Congress including the date, correct salutation to the member of Congress, their name, and address. 2. Brief introduction: Describe who you are and the purpose of the letter. 3. Clear actions: Ask your legislator for clear actions regarding a specific bill currently in Congress. Phrase: “to support the bill” is not a clear action. You may ask something like “to cosponsor” your bill if they are not listed as sponsors/cosponsors yet. If they are listed as sponsors/co-sponsors, you may thank them for that and ask them to move your bill to the committee or move it up to a vote in Senate/House floor. 4. Background: Give a valid argument/background on the healthcare issue/bill to show the importance for a legislator to take an immediate action on a bill. a. Students may not restate a bill description from the Govtrack/Congress.gov websites, but rather go in depth of the specific healthcare issue and show the significance of the problem they write about. 5. Legislative Recommendations and Rationales: Provide concise recommendations for action and state why it might be important to the Legislator. A minimum of 2 rationales that directly support the request​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍​ed action are clear and concise in the body of the letter. 6. Conclusion: The last paragraph is a very brief summary of your letter. 7. The letter should be: a. Be very convincing and concise in your letter. b. One page/single space using a standard letter format and addressed properly to the student’s member of Congress or State Legislator. c. The Letter to the Legislator itself does not require any APA format or in-text citations. d. The second page is not part of your letter, it is a Reference page where you should list all your sources in APA format. Minimum of 2 references required. e. The letter may be in support or in opposition to a current piece of legislation. f. The minimum acceptable font for the letter is 11. Do not use any smaller font.
