This assignment is on Leadership. Find below the instructions.

From your experience in the community, what examples of leadership have you seen in action? What traits or behaviors made an effective leader or an ineffective leader? What abilities do you need to develop in yourself to be a leader? How can you as an individual nurse act as a leader on behalf of clients?

I’ve been posted to Riverside Mission for my community service. The Riverside mission roles include providing shelter for the homeless, they also provides lunch and dinner for NOT only their residence but to people that cannot afford a proper meal. My duties in the Riverside Mission includes serving during meals, and also cleaning up after dinner this includes washing the dishes. I also work on Thursday nights, this is the time the residence and less priveldge people in the community comes together to socialize, also my duties include supervising, serving of food also cleaning up. This night usually gives me the opportunity to interact with the residence by playing different games with them by this I’m beginning to learn about their private lives.

Reflection is an essential component of service learning, serving as the bridge between experiences and learning. “Reflection provides an opportunity for people who are serving to open their hearts and minds to the experiences of others, to acknowledge their wisdom and understand their resources, strengths and needs, and to develop action plans that involve partnership with communities, and prevent doing harm” (http://www.uvm.edu/~dewey/reflection_manual/understanding.html).
Reflection is a critical component of service learning. Students connect the service with what they learnt through critical discussions, presentations, & focus groups (Hoebeke, McCullough, Cagle & Clair, 2009)
Students will keep a reflective journal of experiences in the agency setting. In the following section, you will find some helpful resources for journal writing as you venture out into your community agency. Students will use reflective journal template for journal submissions. (Appendix A)
What is Reflective Journal Writing??Your journal focuses on an incident, situation, or event involving a person or a feeling and it should help you reflect upon and analyze that particular aspect of your service learning. Reflective journaling is not meant to be a diary or just a daily list of activities; rather, it begins with a description of an event and explores thoughts and feelings related to the event.
Effective Reflection:?The purpose of keeping a journal of your experiences is to provide an avenue for critical reflection on the meaning of your service, both personally and academically. By doing this, you will learn firsthand how theory guides practice. Writing may influence your understanding of society and your own values. This activity is an opportunity to examine your place in the community and over time may help you grow as an individual and as a professional nurse.
CNUR 100 REFLECTIVE PROCESS GUIDELINES
Students will be required to journal on their service learning experiences using the reflective cycle.
The Reflective Cycle
Three questions make up the reflective cycle:
WHAT??SO WHAT? NOW WHAT?
Inclusion of all aspects of this cycle is essential in the process. 1. What? (Descriptive thought: non-reflective)
•?Involves doing something, an activity or situation the student was involved in or experienced in the service learning environment that had impact on the student. Describe the facts, what happened and with whom. Identify any course concepts that relate to the experience.
2.    So What? (Analytical reflection)
•?How did this experience affect me personally? Professionally?
•?How did this experience contribute to my understanding of the course concepts?
•?What feelings do I have regarding the experience?
•?What new insights have I gained or re-affirmed?
•?What have I learned about myself? About nursing?
•?What assumptions did I have about this situation before engaging in it?
•?Have my assumptions changed or were they validated? If so, how?
•?What experiences from my past reflect a linkage to the theory (concepts)?
3.    Now What? (Critical reflection)
•?Why is this important in my daily life?
•?How can I apply what I have learned to similar or different situations?
•?Was my behavior appropriate or could I act differently in the future?
•?What impact does this insight have on me as a student?
•?Are there questions that remain for me on this issue? How will I explore these questions?
•?Who can support me in applying/acting upon my new insights & exploring my ongoing questions?
•?How will my nursing practice be affected??Adapted from the work of David Kolb (1984) and Pfeiffer & Jones (1975).

WHAT?
5. Apply?what was learned to a similar or different situation; practice. Practice and grow.
NOW WHAT?
4. Generalize: connect the experience to real-world examples
2. Share the results,
reactions, and observations
SO WHAT?
3. Process: Discuss, look at the experience, analyze, reflect on what was learned.
