The current Hillsborough inquest is being conducted under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 which replaced the Coroners Act 1988 which governed the conduct of the original Hillsborough inquest. The original inquest has been subjected to major criticisms in terms of the process which it followed as well as its final verdict. Please cover both of the points below in your essay.

1. Describe what legal routes were available in domestic law to challenge the verdict of an inquest immediately following the original Hillsborough inquest, and what routes were proposed and implemented under the new Coroners and Justice Act 2009.

2. In the context of your understanding of the standards expected of inquests under Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, and considering what you understand of the Hillsborough inquests, critically discuss whether the legal processes available for challenging the verdicts of English inquests are appropriate and effective.
