Latin America and the Caribbean

Watch the videos listed below and explore the websites. These give fun visual explorations of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Indiana University videos give brief explanations of the geographies of population, language, and religion, particularly in South America. This is a region where the relationship between the physical geography and geographies of settlement and culture are integrally related, but have also been significantly influenced by colonizers. This is also a region that is vulnerable to natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanoes.

As noted in the Indiana University lecture videos, this is a region strongly influenced by colonization and the diffusion of culture. Select either South America or the Caribbean. Write a minimum 5-paragraph essay that gives evidence of colonization in terms of language, religion, and patterns of settlement that might differ from where the pre-Columbian populations settled.
