Language-Culture Connection in SLA
Foreign language programs usually recognize the importance of the language-culture connection: however, some can fall short of recognizing the subtle, deep-seated predispositions that are embedded
in a language.
As potential second/foreign language teachers, describe two classroom lessons in any of the four skill areas (reading, writing, grammar, speaking) in which you could incorporate culture into second
language learning. Make sure you include the language (American Sign Language and English) and the type and proficiency level (for example, beginner 1, beginner 2, intermediate 1, intermediate 2,
advanced) for each lesson. Next, describe the particular activities that you would use within each lesson to incorporate culture in second language learning (refer to the checklist on pp. 200-201).
Describe at least one activity per lesson. Also identify whether the activities will be individual, pair, or group activities. Then, explain why the chosen activities would be the most effective in
incorporating culture in a language classroom.
Lastly, examine how these activities are relevant to at least one prevalent second language acquisition theory, making clear reference to the textbook.
