Language Acquisition

Genie’s case brings about the issues of language acquisition and all the aspects that an individual or a child should have in their development stages. Genie’s case shows that if one is denied certain attributes when growing up, they will miss some important developments. It is important to linguistics as it helps analyze and define the essence with which exposure to a certain language is essential for brain development. The critical period is between birth and three years where children learn and adapt to the linguistics skills of the language they are exposed to. Bearing in mind that Genie grew up in isolation, she could not get a chance to learn any linguistics. Scientists believe that its not all about the nature, but nurture. If a child is not exposed to a certain language, they will barely associate with one (Berken, 2017). They will not be in a position to learn and will live the rest of their lives without certain linguistics skills. Genie would not utter a word at her age when the authorities discovered about her. Her brain had not developed being exposed to a certain language. If her father was in close contact with her and communicated to her, its possible that she could be able to express herself. Her brain would have developed to adapt to the language that the father and those who interacted with her spoke. However, her case was different since she was in isolation and therefore the brain did not record any language.
The conclusion about Genie`s ability to learn language is that since she missed the critical period, it will be difficult for her to adapt later in life. Though she has been taken to several linguistics learning centers, there are difficulties identified in language acquisition. There is a specific age where a child should be exposed to linguistics for brain development. The brain seems to register certain better at a specific age.
