Journal articles
Choose two recent (last 5 years) scholarly journal articles from two entirely different disciplines (Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, or Business). Briefly summarize the articles and
then complete a rhetorical analysis of each one. In what ways do the articles reflect the textual conventions of the discipline as noted by Ede in Chapter 8 of The Academic Writer? How are the
disciplinary conventions the same or different? Do the disciplinary conventions meet certain guidelines? (For example, articles in a journal that targets the field of psychology most likely are
written in APA format and follow a specific format; scholarly reports on scientific research also follow a specific format; articles in the humanities will usually attempt to answer some question
and will include research but also opinion. Refer to Chapter 8 of Ede for more on format and style.) Do the writers seem to use one or a few identifiable ways of writing? (E.g. narrative,
persuasive, scientific)? What kinds of studies, methods, and so on are prevalent within the articles? Make sure to use specific examples to support points you make about the two articles.
