Investigating genes/proteins associated with diseases

Description

Your assignment will be to investigate the following genes/proteins that are associated with two of the following diseases listed below:
Breast Cancer (BRCA 1 gene)
Pancreatic Cancer (RAS protein)
Huntington’s Disease (Huntingtin gene)
Sickle Cell Anemia (Hemoglobin protein)
Type I Diabetes (insulin hormone)

Your report should be a minimum of 5 total pages, typed and doubled-spaced, using Arial or Times New Roman 12-point font. You must include at least 5 references and cite them in your paper. (References do not count in the 5 pages. Wikapedia is not a reference!) You will be graded on content as well as spelling and grammar. Do not assume that spell and grammar check will catch everything!!! Your report must address the following questions to earn full credit:

1.) Background about the disease (what cells/tissues are affected?)
2.) What population is affected the most?
3.) How the gene/protein is involved in the disease (i.e. normal function vs. what went wrong, what signaling pathway is this gene/protein involved in (and explain the pathway under normal circumstances)?)
4.) What are the symptoms?
5.) What type of experimental research is currently being performed to address this disease?
6.) Any key advances/ problems are associated with treatment, if any?
