Interviews with those in Positions of Leadership
Major course assignment during the first month of the class is for students to read, read, and read about leadership. Based on your readings, discussion in class, and
interviews, you are to develop a profile of two leaders’ attributes. Submit, through e-mail, the names and positions of your choice for interviews with those in
position of leadership in health sciences no later than the class period of June 13, 2017. One of your profiles must represent a non-white or non-male leader, and one
must be responsible for programs in health sciences or domains related to healthcare.
Attached is a DRAFT listing of questions that may be appropriate for these interviews. We will finalize this listing on line prior to our June 25 meeting. At this
point (and even after discussion in class on June 11), these questions serve as a guide for the interviews.
The overall report can earn a maximum of 60 points; 25 for each interview and 10 for a summary that contrasts and compares the two—based on your knowledge thus far of
theory and research as well as leadership needs in healthcare. The report will be evaluated per the following criteria:
Summary of interview (portfolio 1 and 2) – Provide info about the person, the position or role of leadership played, any appropriate demographics, etc.; i.e., set up
the general context that underpinned the interviews. (5 points each)
Major points (portfolio 1 and 2) - Highlight the most salient themes or points about leadership posited by the interviewee. This should be descriptive information in
response to the interview questions. (10 points)
Analysis (portfolio 1 and 2) - What theories and/or practices or assumptions about leadership does s/he put forward, advocate, or live by? What philosophical or
learned frameworks guide the point(s) of view put forward? What traits does s/he seem to display well? Not so well? Are there processes of leadership that seem to be
dominant in practice? (10 points)
Summary of interviews: Compare and contrast the two or three interviews in terms of theories discussed thus far, attributes of leadership, and implications for
practice in career and technical education and occupational studies. How did the interviews inform you, help develop you as a leader, and or contribute to your
knowledge and understanding of leadership and leadership development? (10 points)
Mechanics – Use of appropriate grammar, writing mechanics, and APA style; a professionally-appearing format and document; and readiness to present and discuss content
of report in class are expected. Failure to do so could result in point deduction.
