Interesting perceptual illusions.

Description

Discussion Question 4 (needs to be 350 to 400 words long)

Choose ONLY one (1) of the following questions to answer:

(1) According to research, humans can distinguish about 10,000 different odors! Interestingly, however, we have a hard time naming odors. Try this experiment:

Ask someone in your home to choose 6-8 household items that have an odor (do not limit the sample to food items). Place a blindfold over your eyes. Ask the individual to list the items on a sheet of paper, and then place each item close to your nose. Rely ONLY on your sense of smell (not touch or sound) to identify each item. Discuss your results. How many items did you identify correctly/incorrectly? Were some odors easier/harder to detect? What did you learn about the sense of smell?

(2) The textbook includes a number of interesting perceptual illusions. Learn about them and experience them for yourself. Choose your favorite illusion or the one you found to be the most interesting or surprising. Next, discuss why you chose the illusion and how it works. In other words, how is it fooling your brain? For more illusions, simply search for “perceptual illusions” using a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. Please post the accompanying URL (website address) as a reference at the end of your response.
