Intentional decision making

  1. Select a poem that we have read this unit and create a visual composition video that encapsulates the
meaning of the poem to you. Write a paper describing at least three intentional decisions that you made in
creating this video. For example, if one of the poem's main themes was a struggle against the ravages of
death, how did you decide to portray this in your video, and why? Your paper should include the theme of the
poem and how you matched that in your video, as well as any specific literary devices the poet used that you
also chose to use and why. Your video should include a reading of the poem over the video itself.
  2. Select a poem and its song adaptation, and discuss the adaptation in relation to the poem itself. For
example, what was the music choice to go along with the poem? Did that align with the poem's major themes?
How did the songwriter choose to handle some of the poem's main points? Do you think the song adaptation
    improves the poem?
  3. Select a poem that we have read this semester and write an imitation. You must follow the same rules as the
original poet; if you choose a sonnet, you must follow the rhyme scheme and get as close to iambic pentameter
as possible (although for that there is always some poetic license allowed). You should then write a paper
explaining why you chose to emulate the poem you selected, what literary devices did the original poet use and
to what effect, and in what ways did you use the same literary devices, and to what effect. If you choose a
spoken word poem, I would love if you would perform it for the class, but if you choose to record yourself
performing it and turning it in to me that way, that is acceptable as well.
For each of these assignments, you should be sure to include literary analysis of the original poem, including
the literary terms we have discussed in class in your analysis of how the themes were conveyed. Your paper
should include support from your source text (the poem) properly formatted. Be sure to cite appropriately, and
to use quotation marks any time a direct quotation is used. Outside sources are not required for this
assignment, but if used, must be reputable (no study guide websites that tell you analysis ideas) and
    quoted/cited appropriately.
