Since the late 1800’s the insanity defense has been a debated topic. There have been various tests utilized to help determine the legal standards for insanity during criminal trials (M’Naghten rule or test, the irresistible impulse test, the Durham test, McDonald test and the ALI test). In fact, the following notorious criminals have utilized these tests during their trials to assist them with their insanity defense: Ted Kaczynski, John Dupont, John Hinckley Jr, Lorena Bobbitt, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy and Ed Gein.
