INDUSTRIAL ASSESSMENT AND IMPROVEMENT

  1. Assume reasonable data when necessary. Provide necessary assumptions in a list.
If all necessary variables are not indicated below, provide your own reasonable
assumptions. Do not contact vendors, utility company, or other outside parties.
A facility located in Oklahoma City, OK
The average plant indoor temperature is 80 deg F. The average cost of electricity,
including demand, is $0.060 per kWh.
The facility uses four electric barrel extruders without insulation. IR images of a single
extruder barrel are shown in the picture below. Note the positions of the cross-hairs of
the IR camera temperature indicator, below. Assume that this profile is typical of all
    four barrels.
Extruder dimensions: length =10 ft, external diameter =1 ft, efficiency =60%, loading
    =75%
The four extruders are used for 16 hours per day, five days/week, 52 weeks/year.
Develop a recommendation for insulating the four extruder barrels and calculate the
energy and energy cost savings possible. You do not need to calculate the project cost
and the simple payback. (50 points)

  2. Write one paragraph for each of the following terms, describing what they are and
how they are important when considering insulation in industry: R value, k value, and U
    value. (50 points)
    For the entire assignment:
Properly cite all references using footnotes. Provide company, organization, or author
    name; title; and URL.
