Improve patients health literacy

Assignment brief. There is evidence that a person’s characteristics and behaviours as well as social determinants of health can impact upon their health and well-being. Health literacy can be improved through educative and health promotion strategies. These strategies can improve patients’ knowledge, understanding and engagement with the health care system. In keeping with this principle, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s registered nurse standards for practice (2016) requires that the nurse or midwife “provide the information and education required to enhance people’s control over health”. Discuss a health promotion activity, strategy or program of your choice that aims to improve patients’ health literacy (e.g. Ask-me-3 and The Water Well Project). The activity, strategy or program (the intervention) can be designed for implementation by an individual health care worker or a whole department, hospital, organisation or health care network. Remember to relate your content to published evidence in the scholarly literature throughout.
