During the process of researching your issue for paper one, you read at least three argumentative articles on a single topic for the purpose of summarizing and evaluating the claims put forth in each article. Using Chapter Eight from our textbook as a reference, identify a single area or issue of factual disagreement within your topic of choice. Regardless of their stance on the overall topic/issue, the articles you read may differ in their positions on the particular factual matter being discussed. For example, two articles might both agree that vaccination is effective, yet they may disagree about whether vaccinations should be mandatory. Similarly, two articles might disagree regarding the effectiveness of vaccines, and therefore also disagree about whether they should be mandatory. In either case, the factual component of the argument--the effectiveness of vaccines--is a factual issue for which evidence can be gathered.

In your paper, you need to identify what the area of factual disagreement is and then make a case for the position that seems to be factually correct. For example, those who are writing about vaccinations would identify the fact that many people who disagree about the issue of mandatory vaccinations have a factual disagreement about the effectiveness of vaccines. That is the issue of factual disagreement, and so the paper would then need to make a compelling case for whether (or not?) vaccinations are effective.

What types of evidence can or should be used to make a factual determination one way or the other?
What types of data, statistics, and other sorts of measurements are available?
How was that information collected? Were the methods for data collection reliable?
Who is presenting the information? Do they appear to be credible? Trustworthy? Unbiased?
Is there any other relevant data or information that might help settle the factual disagreement, but is not available or hasn't been collected/measured/gathered? If so, what is that information, and how might it be collected?
