Has the Department of Homeland Security carried out its prescribed mission per the legislation?
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks to prevent terrorism and protect the United States from other threats to its security. The department has a broad mission, and it is difficult to assess its effectiveness in all areas. However, there is some evidence to suggest that DHS has not always been effective in carrying out its mission.
For example, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has found that DHS has struggled to coordinate its activities and to share information effectively. The GAO has also found that DHS has not always been effective in managing its resources or in meeting its performance goals.
