One of the central concerns of our textbook is the idea of liberty and how it has changed over time. For this assignment you are to take a closer look at a period of time covered by one of the chapters of our text and write to answer the basic question, “What was the most substantial way liberty changed in this period?”

To answer this question effectively, you will need to consider:
Who were the main historical actors (groups of people) in this period and what were their notions of liberty? What social, economic, and political changes occurred? Did their notions and ideas of liberty change over the period? Did some groups win, while others lost? What factors contributed to these gains and losses? What would motivate someone in a way to deprive another of their liberty? What about this time period can you see reflected in our thoughts as Americans contemplate liberty and its meaning in the 21st century?
