You are required to complete a 6-8 page book report on any of the writings or books written by anyone of the intellectuals found in your class text, Islam in Transition: Muslim Perspectives. The book chosen for this report is “The Future of Culture in Egypt” (1938) by Taha Hussein. Your report will be a thorough summary and analysis of the book you have chosen. You should begin with an introduction of the person you have chosen to write your book report on. This introduction need not be longer than a half page or a full paragraph. The middle part of your paper, the longest part, should be a chapter by chapter summary and the last part of your paper should be an analysis of the book you have chosen. Your analysis should entertain questions like: How is this Islamic thinker situated in the greater context of Islamic thought which you have studied throughout this semester? In what way is this intellectual’s ideas stimulating, lacking, or (potentially) bothersome to the general Islamic thought of the day? How does this intellectual’s thought fit in modemity? Is it alien, complimentary, revolutionary, or outdated? Further, was this work representative of basic Islamic principles or neglecting such principles? Do you think this intellectual operated out of strong biases that negatively affect his/her thought? You should answer some of these questions in your analysis but you can also include your own insightful questions.
