A picture is worth a thousand words so the saying goes. Certainly photographs can help us in understanding
history. They transport us to a particular time and place; evoke an emotion; and create an interpretation of the
past.
For this option, select a minimum of three photographs total from the collections below and write 500 words on
each photo. You may select your photographs on a topic, theme or those that simply speak to you. You do not
need to select from only one collection.
For each photograph, please address the following:

  1. Describe the picture – when was the photograph taken? Who is in it? What is happening? Is there a
historical event associated with this photograph?
  2. Why is this photograph important? What does it tell us about a time and place? Has its meaning changed
over time? Did it take time to become important? If so, why? What does it say now
