Health Technology Management

A number of medical devices are utilized directly by physicians e.g.implants, imaging equipment, and surgery tools. According to the article by ECRI Institute, “Wasting Millions….” , there is a significant cost associated with allowing physicians to choose their favorite product or influence the choice of these medical devices termed Physician Preference Items.

Do you agree with ECRI Institute that physician preference purchases are a bad practice or are there reasons why this should continue?
If a bad practice, provide your reasons, justify, and state what methods can be used to get physicians to change..
If you feel physicians should continue to chose all their specialty products, state your case, justify it, and indicate how physicians can influence administrators to get them to understand their perspective – what arguments can physicians use.
Please justify your answer with references from your experience, the course content and at least one external reference on the web or professional journal.
