Glomerular Filtration
What is Glomerular Filtration? How is the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) determined? What regulatory mechanisms help control and stabilize GFR?
Sample Answer
Glomerular filtration is the process by which blood is filtered through the glomerulus, a tiny ball of capillaries in the kidneys. The glomerulus is surrounded by a capsule called the Bowman’s capsule. The blood pressure in the glomerulus forces water and dissolved substances out of the blood and into the Bowman’s capsule. This process is called ultrafiltration.
The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the amount of fluid that is filtered through the glomerulus each minute. The GFR is an important measure of kidney function. A low GFR can indicate kidney damage.
