Globalisation, Crime and Control

A 2,000 word report on global trends in crime and justice. Using the readings from weeks 1 to 5 of the module, and additional illustrations obtained from reputable media sources, government, voluntary sector and research centre websites, answer all of the following questions in order. It is not necessary to include an introduction or conclusion.

  1. What are the implications of globalisation for crime, and criminology?
  2. Outline the differences between the positivist and interpretivist approaches to comparative criminology. Illustrate your answer with reference to one form of crime.
  3. When considering the conditions and experience of prisons internationally, how do the UN Nelson Mandela Rules both help and hinder analysis? Provide examples to support your argument.
  4. What is ‘Southern Criminology’? What criticisms do Southern Criminologists have of dominant or mainstream theories? What are the limitations of this perspective, particularly in light of colonialism and coloniality?
  5. Critically consider how useful ‘global North’ theories are for explaining gangs and organised crime in Bangladesh and/or China.
  6. Analyse the experience of imprisonment in Brazil.
