From Gods to Goddesses: Gender and Religion/ Witch-hunts

  1. Religion can be oppressive or liberating when it comes to gender. Discuss, with reference to examples.
  2. Identify and briefly consider at least three ways feminists have engaged with religion.
  3. How do the authors of Malleus maleficarum (1486) draw on Christian doctrine to make the case that women are particularly susceptible to witchcraft?
  4. To what extent were the European witch-hunts a gendered phenomenon?
  5. The documentary The Burning Times is typical of a radical feminist interpretation of the witch-hunts. What is this interpretation and how persuasive is it?

Argument/ analysis – i.e did you answer the question and did you do so in a thoughtful/ critical fashion?

Style and structure – did you write clearly and organise your work effectively?

Research and referencing – did you engage with the necessary material and follow the referencing instructions
