Framework of Global Economies
Present a very short Case Study that fits into the broad framework of Global Economies. You can choose any example as long as you can explain how it reflects or is part of the global economy. A case study can be contemporary or historical. Do not choose a case study that we have already covered in class, unless you are illuminating something significantly different about it.
The case study must be concrete, specific, and located in a place and time. Your case study should have a specific name and be identifiable as a single example. (Do not choose a class of items. Simply pick one particular specimen.) A case study may fit into themes, but a theme is not a case study. Remember, choose only one example for your case study.
For example, a student could discuss Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962) as a case study, but should not select the entire category of pop art. The student’s examination of how this specific work of art fits into the global economy might relate to a discussion of the global art market, but that would be the context, not the case study.
Another student could select the Madison Wind Farm in upstate New York. The specific farm would be the case study, not the general topic of wind energy, or even, “wind farms.” In presenting the particulars of this wind farm, the student could discuss renewable energy as a global industry. But that discussion should follow from the student’s chosen case.
- Case Study Write-up 5 pages, double spaced in standard 12-point font such as Times
• Introduce and situate your case study: explain what it is and its context in terms of location and time period.
• Tell us how your case study fits into the global economy. What structures, institutions, forces, and actors of the global economy can we see through your case study?
• Evaluate your case study. You don’t need to come to a single verdict, but you should tell us what you think about your case study, as it relates to the ideas of our class.
• Bonus points if you relate your case study to specific readings and/or other course material in your presentation (you will do this in the write-up—see below).
• Write up a short report on your case study. You may follow the format of your presentation above.
• In the written report, you must explicitly relate your research to at least two course texts through direct reference to them. In-text citations should include author, year, and page number: e.g. (Johnson, 2002: 24).
• Include a list of Sources Cited. You should consult a minimum of 5 sources, preferably including academic ones.
