A significant risk factor is stiff competition in the automotive market. The automobile industry often has expenses and receipts that are in foreign currency. These costs and receipts leave the market open to fluctuations in exchange rates and general economic changes in the globe. Some of Ford’s main competitors include General Motors (Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Cadillac), TATA Motors, Chrysler (Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge). Major foreign industry players are BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda and Nissan among others.
The auto industry is taken by many to be an oligopoly market structure. This aids the industry players in reducing consequences of price based wars. The players understand that this type of competition does not cause the size of the market to increase. It, however, is changing due to the increased competition in the industry. Car manufacturers are now using rebates and long term warranties to attract customers. It is having its effect on profit margins and sales.
