Read “The White Snake” and then analyze, identifying in greater detail at least two motifs within the story, and suggesting what you think the ‘social meaning’ behind those motifs might be (i.e. a glass slipper as symbol of wealth / higher class, or maybe it is of a pure heart? A magic tree on late mother’s grave as a symbol for overcoming grief?) In the second half of your paper, reflect on where you have encountered those motifs (or something similar) in popular culture—whether a song, film, game, or television show—and analyze how that motif or narrative element was used, exploring how its use is similar and how its use is different.
