In this first week, you are introduced to family violence via your textbook and several resources provided to you. This paper, in at least 2 pages, should address each of these artifacts by responding to the questions listed below. Please carefully organize following the outline below – sectioning your paper with same headings as what are in bold, and responding to the guided questions. Please make sure that you write in essay format and reference the artifacts.
I. Starting Views on Family Violence
Before you get too far into the materials, write about what you know, already, about family violence. What do you think it is? Where did you learn about it? What does it consist or, especially if you had to define it. What do you think are the major issues in our culture today with family violence? This section allows you to get onto paper your starting place so that as you move through the course and work on your final paper, you can review where you began and see what you have learned.
II. Love the Way You Lie
Watch the Eminem and Rhianna video. First, watch it with the volume off and document the visual actions that you saw. What do you see that contributes to intimate partner violence? Who is doing what? Next, just listen to the words without watching the video and document what you hear. What messages are being shared by the singers? Finally, viewing this video as an educational resource (rather than a video that glories violence), share what can be learned from it about the cycle of violence.
III. Power and Control & Red Flags
Review these resources and write a reflection on what you have learned from them. What did they spark for you?
IV. Letter to My Abuser & Case Studies
Review these resources, and again, share what you learned and how they relate to your understanding of family violence and the material from Chapter 1. You don’t need to worry about the questions at the bottom of the case studies; rather, focus on what the survivors whose stories are told are saying. You may consider how what they share fits into the material from the chapter, the cycle of violence, or the resources in section III of this assignment. Additionally, share what issues were presented that you had not considered before?
V. Ignorance on Abuse
What did you learn from this interview? Why might someone stay in an abusive relationship? What messages does society send about those who choose to stay?
VI. Conclusion
This should be an overall reflective section. With all the material that you reviewed for this assignment, what do you think about family violence now? How has your definition or view of it shifted or broadened?
