Exploring the Case Study Method (Research Methods)
INSTRUCTIONS: Read the pdf article posted on BB (“Case Study: Genain Quadruplets”). This study demonstrates using the case study method to assess the role that nature and nurture may have played in the development of schizophrenia for each of the four girls who make up the quadruplets described in the publication. After reading the article, answer the following questions. This response should be emailed as a word document attachment by 6 PM Friday, March 5. PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL NOT BE HAVING A LIVE SESSION ON MONDAY, MARCH 1 (WEEK 5);
(1) Who were the sample for this case study?
(2) Why were the Genains specifically used for this study? What was rare or unique about them?
(3) What does monozygotic mean in the context of twin studies?
(4) The authors give background regarding the histories of both the mother and father of the quadruplets. Identify some specific details of either parent’s history or background that you think may have impacted the quadruplets.
(5) Are there details specifically regarding Gertrude’s pregnancy or labor and delivery that may have played a role in the quadruplet’s later development of schizophrenia?
(6) Identify at least one symptom that one of the quadruplets demonstrated and the role that you believe nature or nurture played in the development of that symptom (be sure and identify the name of the specific woman you select):
(7) How would this source be cited as an in-text citation in proper APA format?
(8) How would this source be documented in proper APA format as a full reference?
(9) Can you identify at least one advantage of the researchers using the case study method to study these women? Be specific.
(10) Can you identify at least one methodological disadvantage demonstrated based on investigating these women via the case study method?
