Evaluating the Effectiveness of Protests

Evaluate the effectiveness of recent protests aiming to make changes to policing in America. These protests are not the first to happen in response to police brutality and killing of Black people and people of color, but they are among the largest and most widespread in recent history. Your essay should do these two things:

Inform your reader about the protests. Imagine they maybe knew that protests have been happening, but they haven’t followed them closely or only saw highlights in the news or online. Answer questions like these: When did the protests happen? Where did they happen? Who protested? Why did people protest? What was the reaction to the protests? You may also clear up any misconceptions that people may have about the protests because misinformation and disinformation is common.
Persuade your reader to agree with your evaluation of the protests. Essentially, you should be answering this question: Do you think the protests were effective at reaching their goals? In other words, did the protests lead to any changes in policing or in the way people think about issues like police brutality or police killing of community members? You’ll support your opinion with evidence from outside sources to help convince your reader that your evaluation is right.
