European Music History Essay

Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition for piano.

Format of paper:

  1. The essay is due on Friday of Week 5 and should be e mailed to me.
  2. The paper must be typed, at least 3 pages of text, double spaced. You should use Helvetica font 12, with left and right margins of 1.25 inches, and top and bottom margins of 1 inch.
  3. You do not need a bibliography or footnotes.

  4. Write one page of biography on Musorgsky’s life. Include his dates,
    his inclusion in the “Mighty Handful”(or Fistful), and the cause of his death.
    Mention a few other important works of his, including title, dates, and genres.
  5. Listen to Musorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” suite for solo piano while following the score. Be sure to listen to the piano version. One way to find it is on youtube.
  6. Discuss the piece in one page being sure to include:
    a. Who was the painter.
    b. Why did Musorgsky compose this piece.
    c. How many paintings are in it.
    d. What music introduces the first painting and recurs.
    e. List a few arrangements of the piece.
  7. In one page discuss 2 of the individual movements that you enjoyed the most.
    Why did you like these particular movements? (This is not a research
    section, but your own subjective feelings.)
    Include how Musorgsky’s music represented the painting. What did you find the
    most effective aspects? Was there anything that surprised you in the
    the music.
