Ethics is a foundation for developing one’s lifestyle and is a cornerstone of philosophy, and also civilization. Throughout history ethical systems have been

articulated that outright contradict each other—are ethical rules relative (guidelines) or universal (laws)? For this assignment you will first read (“Ethics.” The

Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1999. Credo Reference. Web. 9 June 2014.), which is an encyclopedic entry concerning ethics

found in the “Credo Reference” database located on the library’s website. Second, you are to read “Exodus,” “The Messiah,” and the “Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin”

from the iBook. Your task will be to develop your own personal viewpoint concerning ethics and explore the viewpoints of others. Then, you will assess the differences

between these viewpoints and articulate how your own conception of ethics differs from the views expressed in the readings.

Structure: begin with an introduction that outlines the purpose and topics of your essay. Your first body paragraph will address the encyclopedic entry concerning

ethics, and you will outline your concept of ethics. The second body paragraph will address the readings “Exodus” and “The Messiah”; your task will be to demonstrate

the differences between these two readings’ framing of ethics. The third body paragraph will analyze the “Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin.” The fourth, and last,

body paragraph will juxtapose the differences between your conception of ethics and Benjamin Franklin’s conception. End with a summative conclusion.

References: Students will support their explanations with quotes from four references. It is critical that you use sources to support and build your argumentation
