Ethics in Nursing
• Explore an ethical dilemma from either documentary Code Gray (1983) or The Waiting Room (2012).
Describe one ethical dilemma.
• What individuals and groups have an important stake in the outcome? Discuss three options that could be
used for resolution of the dilemma?
• Evaluate the three options by asking the following questions:
o Which option will produce the most good and do the least harm? (The Utilitarian Approach)
o Which option best respects the rights of all who have a stake? (The Rights Approach)
o Which option treats people equally or proportionately? (The Justice Approach)
o Which option best serves the community as a whole, not just some members? (The Common Good
Approach)
o Which option leads me to act as the sort of person I want to be? (The Virtue Approach).
• Considering all these approaches, which option best addresses the situation?
• List three ethical principles that are applicable in making a decision regarding the ethical dilemma. Autonomy,
justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence are examples of ethical principles that may be considered in the
decision. The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University Framework for Ethical Decision
Making (2017), American Nurses Association (ANA) website and your textbook have resources that can help
guide in identifying ethical standards. Be sure to cite your references using APA format.
• In summary, discuss the impact of this ethical issue on the nursing profession.
