Current Events Commentaries. Each week beginning in week two, you will be responsible for identifying a current event in the news. You will write up a one- or two-
page, double-spaced commentary on the event, analyzing it in relation to one of the keywords assigned for that week. Your commentary will include a brief definition in
your own words of the keyword and will be accompanied by citations to news coverage of the event found using the sources below. Your commentary may include analysis of
the coverage itself (that is, a critique of how it has been covered), but this is not necessary. Each commentary will be graded based on your demonstrated
understanding of the keyword and the originality of your analysis of the event. Summarizing the event is insufficient for a passing grade. Note that while giving an
opinion about the event is fine, it is not the same thing as analyzing the event. The commentary will not receive full credit if you do not connect it to ideas of
race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity. A list of alternative news sources is available on Canvas, under “Modules.”
