Servant leadership approach aims at encouraging relationship-oriented workplace. Key characteristics that define servant leadership include humility, developing and empowering people, stewardship and leading from the front. These characteristics have been determined to be shared across different religions and cultures (Van Dierendonck, 2011). Five different religions such as the Hindu, Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism have been shown to have characteristics of servant leadership that include charisma and humility. Just like in Christianity, Buddhism strongly embraces the virtues of servant leadership based on inner and outer practice of leadership virtues geared towards guiding of followers.
A study that was carried out by Winston and Ryan (2008) showed that the servant leadership cuts across cultural barriers. They showed that Southern Asian and Anglo cultural society embraces common values on servant leadership as do the American society. The study reported that the leaders in the mentioned societies embrace the principle of employee empowerment and participation in leadership, which is the hallmark of servant leadership.
