Effective digressions

Content: Is the subject matter compelling? Does the writer display an intellectual curiosity? Are the ideas in the essay reasonable, measured, “academic” in quality and nature? Is the writer’s approach to idea safe, or does it take chances? Just how inventive is it?
Style: These are stylistic elements to look for and evaluate: complex/compound sentences, sentence variety (sentence types, lengths, beginnings), transitions, very precise and descriptive nouns and verbs. adjective-noun combinations, alliteration/sound effects, parallel construction.
Details: Is the writing both specific and descriptive, or is it too vague and nondescript/noncommittal? If there are pertinent details, are they well-chosen, and are there enough of them? Are any of the examples repetitive or unnecessary? Are any of the details distracting or ineffective?
Structure: Is there a clearly delineated focus, claim, or thesis? Are paragraphs well-developed? Are there good transitions connecting paragraphs? Is there logical progression? Are there unnecessary digressions? Are there effective digressions? Is the essay in any way structurally inventive? Is there an expanded conclusion?
Accuracy: Are there noticeable and distracting errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar, mechanics, verbals, fluency? If so, how many? Are there punctuation omissions?
