What does the future hold (or what should it)?
Your assignment is to choose a(n): (1) emerging technology or market, (2) US cyber policy area,
or (3) threat category or attack vector. The focus should be on what will/should happen through
existing literature though obviously you can propose something different. Understanding the
current state of affairs will obviously be quite important, but the paper should look forward to the
degree that is possible. Ideally, you should discuss both/multiple potential futures and why you
are correct. Some example of broad topic areas that could be adapted for this purpose are: nonfungible tokens (NFTs), government intervention to improve
cybersecurity, central bank digital
currencies (CBDCs), cryptocurrency regulation, ransomware. For many of these topics, you will
want to select a small subset of the topic – for instance, how to motivate private-sector
cybersecurity efforts could be a topic. Both economic arguments (ie incentives, cost) and
statistical evidence (trends, etc.) will be helpful in making the argument. The target length for the
paper is 3,000 words not to exceed 3,500 words.
